A complex, bittersweet herbal liqueur built from 56 different herbs, roots, fruits, and blossoms, macerated and aged in oak for at least a year before a final blend with caramel, sugar, and water, its exact recipe still a closely guarded secret nearly a century after it was perfected.

Curt Mast, an avid hunter and heir to his father Wilhelm's vinegar and wine business in Wolfenbüttel, Germany, spent years experimenting before finally landing on his herbal liqueur's formula in 1934, rejecting early attempts as too sweet or too weakly citrus forward. He named the finished spirit Jägermeister, meaning "master hunter," and even tested bottle shapes by dropping them onto an oak floor to find one durable enough to survive shipping, and nearly a century later the recipe, the green bottle, and the leaping stag logo all remain unchanged, still produced in Wolfenbüttel by the same family, now in its fifth generation.
