In 1806, James Gosling, the eldest son of English wine and spirits merchant, set sail for America with a shipload of goods, only for his vessel to become becalmed for ninety one days and put in at St. George's, Bermuda. Where after much trial and error the family developed a distinctive dark blend of triple pot distilled rums, aged in once used American oak bourbon barrels. It was sold from the barrel as "Old Rum" until the First World War, then bottled and sealed with black wax, until customers began asking for the "Black Seal."
