Warm gold in the glass from the saffron steeped post-distillation. The nose is rich and aromatic: juniper, cinnamon, and cassia upfront with a distinctive saffron earthiness threading through. The palate is full-bodied and spice-forward, with orange peel and liquorice mid-palate and a long, warm finish.
Old Raj is produced by Cadenhead's, Scotland's oldest independent bottler, and has been in continuous production since 1972. It is one of a small number of gins to use real saffron, added after distillation to impart both color and flavor. Bottled at 55% ABV, the higher proof amplifies the botanical intensity considerably. Nine base botanicals including orris, angelica, and nutmeg, with saffron as the defining post-distillation addition.
