Light ruby, translucent and luminous. Geraniums, fresh violet, and crushed red berry on the nose, with chalk, alpine pine, and a thread of eucalyptus underneath. On the palate bright cherry and raspberry, refreshing acidity, silky tannins, and a clean chalky finish with a whisper of white pepper.
Arpepe is five generations of the Pelizzatti Perego family farming steep, south-facing granite terraces near the Swiss border, where Nebbiolo is known locally as Chiavennasca. Recent genetic research suggests Valtellina harbors more diversity of Nebbiolo clones than the Langhe, raising the serious possibility that the grape originated here, not in Piedmont. Fermented with native yeasts, two months maceration in old chestnut vats, aged in chestnut casks with no new oak. Certified organic. Valtellina DOC, Lombardy.
